Manufacturing Process

Step 1: Using Reclaimed Teak Wood

We use reclaimed teak wood because it is stable and resistant to warping. Since the wood has already expanded and contracted over time, it is well-seasoned and ready for use. Choosing reclaimed wood also helps reduce the need for newly cut timber, contributing to forest conservation.

Step 2: Hand Carving

Our artisans carve the teak wood into idols, temples, mirrors, showpieces, and furniture based on traditional and custom designs. Each piece is handcrafted, making every item slightly different from the others.

Step 3: Surface Preparation

To create a smooth surface, the wood undergoes ghisai (sanding and leveling). This step removes roughness and ensures that the silver can be applied evenly and securely.

Step 4: Silver Cladding

Sheets of 99% pure silver are carefully hammered onto the prepared wood. Pure silver is used because it is soft and can be shaped easily to fit the carved details.

Step 5: Engraving

Once the silver is in place, artisans use hand tools to engrave patterns and details. This process, called kantrai, requires steady hands and precision. Plain silver cladding is more challenging since there are no engraved designs to mask any imperfections.

Step 6: Finishing and Protection

The silver is polished to enhance its shine, and a Japanese lacquer coating is applied to slow down tarnishing. This protective layer helps maintain the silver’s appearance for a longer time.

This process ensures that the final product is well-crafted, with attention to detail at every step.
